Argentine Tango was born alongside the genre of music in the late 1800s or early 1900s in the lower-class districts of Buenos Aires. The music and dance were influenced by the African enslaved people imported there and European immigrants. The worldwide spread of Tango came when the sons of wealthy Argentine families made it fashionable and traveled to Paris, London, and New York City.
It is still danced around the world today in the setting of a milonga, or “dance party,” and each step is improvised based on the music, the couple dancing, and the entire floor of dancers. With its long history and rich culture, Tango communities have a unique etiquette guiding all areas of the milonga, and we will discuss these “codes” of behavior throughout the class. I encourage you to read more about the history and how the dance exists today under the F&Qs at http://tangogypsies.com.
Having danced in an open embrace for all the other weeks, this week will be about the close embrace. Keeping the fluidity and comfort of the open embrace, a close embrace will bring dancers chest to chest.
In the entire series, we will explore intentional walking (week 1), dissociation (week 2), the cross (week 3), systems of walking (week 4), changes of direction (week 5), and the close embrace (week 6). If you are new to a fundamentals class, please read the full description of this format.
Registration is not required but strongly encouraged as details are always subject to change. Get in touch to let me know you are coming.
