Below are descriptions of the ongoing classes and events I offer. For specific topics, dates and times, please see CALENDAR.
Please read the CODE OF CONDUCT before attending a class or event.
introduction
This three-week course is the perfect way to dip your toes into a particular style while building a solid foundation for your dance. This course will prepare you for the more extensive explorations in the FUNDAMENTALS class. In this INTRO class, you will begin learning about the dance's connection, rhythms, spatial structure, pattern structure, character, and motion. In addition, we will introduce you to the dance’s history, evolution, and current etiquette.
$15 per class, $40 for 3
fundamentals
A fundamentals class* is designed to explore the skills essential for the chosen dance style. Each week's lesson will rotate through fundamental concepts and patterns to continue to study in depth the dance's connection, rhythms, spatial structure, pattern structure, character, and motion covered in the INTRODUCTION course. No partner is necessary, and classes are designed for all levels, both newcomer and returning students. The depth of each week will depend on who shows up and the class’s needs. Progress and growth require continuous learning, regular practice, and social dancing. Attending a series in consecutive order is encouraged, but drop-ins are always welcome.
$15 per class, $40 for 3
*This class is based on a format designed by Karen Jaffe and used with permission.
Next Steps
Each week, this class will choose a new pattern rooted in the basic concept we are covering in FUNDAMENTALS that day. We can further explore that basic concept and create more variations by playing with timing, shape, direction, foot placement, style, etc. You must have completed a series of FUNDAMENTALS to join this class or have equivalent knowledge. The FUNDAMENTALS and NEXT STEPS are designed to work together and are a great pairing to take at the same time.
$15 per class, $40 for 3
If you are taking Fundamentals for the second, third, fourth, etc. time, they are $10 per class. The content of the Fundamentals is designed to pair well with Next Steps.

Valley West Coast Swing Sunday Socials
Once a month, we gather to dance and socialize; a social dance! We alternate between the two valleys, the New River Valley and the Roanoke Valley. Check the calendar for each month’s location. It's a relaxed, friendly afternoon where all levels of dancers are welcome to come and enjoy. We begin with an hour of instruction to get you moving, and then we dance to a playlist full of current and classic tunes. A safe and welcoming space is a priority, so please read the code of conduct before attending.

These practices are often connected to class series and will mostly feature music suited to that style. You do not have to have attended the class to join us, this is casual event for all levels of learners looking to improve. A safe and welcoming space is a priority, so please read the code of conduct before attending.
